Hindu aniconic and iconic symbols seek to represent forces and energies - aspects of a single supreme Isvara which, is unmanifest and in real terms unrepresentable.

The sacred syllable AUM, pictographically represented as this painting, stands beginning and the end of most Hindu prayers. Sage Manu said that the tri-syllable Aum means 'earth', 'sky' and 'heaven'. Aum is considered as the very essence of the Vedas. A lot about Aum has been written in Hindu Scriptures. Chanting Aum with human voices is not enough; since the sound has a very high or low rate of vibration, it cannot be uttered by the human voice. The cosmic sound Aum is not perceptible to the senses, but it can be experienced in very deep meditation.

This visual depiction of Aum, is a tool for meditation. The positive, spiritual energy emanating from this helps purify the environment of negativity and profanity. The artist has not only batiked a sacred symbol but used colours which are soothing and encourage tranquility. Yellow is the colour of bhakti or ascetism and red personifies energy, both of them required to achieve success while chanting Aum.
