The Mughal emperors had varying moods which found expression at the hands of their artist's and craftsmen who gave tangible form to their flight of fantasy. Mughal miniatures abound in the picturesque, the remote and the unknown. Yogis and ascetics, spirituality and meditation fascinated Akbar, and his library contained illustrated studies of their positions.

According to a custom relating to the observance of austerity, men and women of nobility would give up palatial luxuries and comforts and retire to the forest for leading an austere life and for devoting themselves to meditation.

In this painting, the man observing austerity as per the custom is seen seated on bare land. Tying himself with a belt to provide steadiness to his posture, the man is sitting in a yogic disposition. He, who is supposed to have given up on luxuries of life is still dressed in rich clothes and strings of pearls. He wears a turban, though not ostentatious, yet color-coordinated with his clothes. Holding a wine casket in hand, he is finding it difficult to give up on the good things in life he is accustomed to. There is, however, a determined look on his face as he looks straight ahead.

The foreground is a light ground dotted with small flowering plants. The background is treated plain except for a slight suggestion of aerial perspective with the help of a fine strip across the top, without defining the horizon line. The whole picture has charm and dignity and the execution is crisp and captivating.
