The artist has powerfully portrayed the atmosphere of a deep, dark night, where forms fail to retain their distinction. A distant hut, a small patch of land near it, a few trees, strands of grass, boulders and of course the majestic figure of the old nobleman along with the mound he is based on, are the only elements which have been able to steal from across the clouds some rays of light and illuminate themselves.
The artist has sought in such a landscape his contrasts. The scarlet red sheath of his sword, its gold-inlay, his golden shoes, pyjamas, shash, the jama's frill and embroidery, the gold embossing on his walking stick, and all his ornaments have all come out powerfully against this dark, arid and formless background.
The semi-grey beard, and eyes set deep into their sockets, define this gentleman's advancing age. His sharp features, golden complexion, rich jewels, his crown, and indeed his overall magnificence speak of his regal lineage. His body language and the expectant expression in his eyes, suggest that he is either waiting for someone, or has lost his way.
The light and shade effects, and the fine portraitural attributes betray a distinct influence of Mughal paintings of the Jehangir era.
