The paintings of the gone era concentrated on court scenes, harem encounters, battle and hunting escapades and portraits. But genre scenes were not neglected altogether.

This painting depicts a scene outside a small hut of a village in a picturesque setting. A woman, marked by extraordinary beauty, holds her domestic goat by the ear and leads it to be tied up. She is bare feet with hennaed hands and feet. She wears a rose pink coloured saree with an ochre blouse. With the help of shading, the artist gives the saree numerous pleats and folds. The details are carefully worked out, especially the many nuances of the body complexions. The limbs are well modeled and the torso has a typical rounded chest under the translucent fabric. The earrings and the necklaces are reminiscent of the Mughal era.

The picture holds much more than the beautiful woman. The sky is dark, grayish-blue, reflecting that its almost night and the woman goes about doing chores which ought to be completed before she retires for the night. She is taking the goat to tie to the pole. Close to her also lie a basket containing hay and weeds for the goat to chew on. In the distance are low mounds of green hills but as the perspective becomes further, the hills turn brown, till they merge with the heavy skies.

Not only are the colours judiciously spread but the line is confident and unswerving. Both the elements together bring to life an otherwise common theme.
