The religion of Vaishnavism and particularly the Radha Krishna cult, provided Kangra painters with inspiration. These paintings depict scenes from the lives of Radha and Krishna, and communicate spiritual concepts of the Krishna cult vividly.

Here we see a vision of beauty and love as Radha and Krishna meet in a grove by the river bank. The palms, with fan shaped leaves and tall and straight trunks, together with other flower bearing trees form the hideout for the lovers, away from prying eyes. Krishna seems to have annoyed his beloved on some pretext. Radha is walking away with Krishna's flute, his prized possession. Krishna is sorry and is begging for his flute to be returned. He has spread one of his hands and with the other he gestures to her explaining his stance. Radha is not ready to listen and walks away. This love-quarrel is being witnessed by a peacock who enjoys it and hence dances. The pond in the foreground has floating lotus flowers and buds. On the bank are more rows of colourful flowers.

The artist has very judiciously used the warm colours such as yellow, red and oranges, against the cool green in the background. The two colour zones are divided by the grayish-blue river flowing down across the painting. This artwork depicts a happy blend of the sensuous and the spiritual.
