The Benevolent God Ganesha happens to be the god of learning and the remover of obstacles, besides being a bestower of success and as such he is invoked at the beginning of all religious and social functions.

Sitting in utkutika asana (a sitting posture in which the heels are brought together and kept close to the bottom) against a huge bolster. This four armed Ganesha holds a noose in one right hand. This was given to him by the god of the waters, Varuna. The noose helps to control human passion. It also serves to bind and stop the action of the evil. In the left hand he holds an axe given to him by Parasurama who had received it from Shiva. His primary right hand carries a pink coloured lotus which was from Varuna's brilliance. The other hand moves towards the tray of sweet meats.

Ganesha wears a yellow antarvastra which reaches up to his ankles. A rust coloured scarf covers both his shoulders and falls behind him. He wears a decorative crown which is a high band decorated with precious stones and a feather. Pearl strings fall on his forehead and tassles fall close to his large ears. Ardhachandra adorns Ganesha's forehead. His broken tusk pictures prominently. In the foreground is a modaka patra, a small dish filled with sweet balls. A tiny mouse, with folded hands waits on the lord.

Bright colours are used on a plain field. A green halo surrounds the god's head which is again a different colour from his body. The same green colour is used to denote the ground on which he sits. This picture depicts the god in all his benevolence which is his characteristic.
