This painting has a highly controlled technique, formal elegance, and of course, a brilliant finish. It portrays the Chinese traveler with a bundle of possessions, hanging onto a stick resting on his shoulders. The face and figure is cosmic, bordering on caricature. His grin displays small white teeth, causing his eyes to narrow and forming laugh lines around his mouth. The close cut hair and beard is prickly, achieved by small brush strokes. The body has patches of hair, even on his feet. He gently rubs his hand on the un-proportionate belly. He wears a long robe, covering his back and sweeping behind him. The straps of his slippers give away an unsteady hand; strange, because the rest of the paintings show immaculate draughtsmanship. The subdued colours and a pale, clear background deletes anything inessential.
The painting encourages not only appraisal but a joyous feeling too.
