The Crested Goshawk is found at all altitudes from sea level up to at least 6500 feet in suitable tropical forests. It is distributed through South India and Sri Lanka, from south of the Himalayas to east as far as Taiwan and the Philippines; and south to Indonesia. Although somewhat secretive, the species is certainly not shy, and often permits close human approach when perched overlooking some clearing or track, watching for prey. It feeds mainly on birds, but also takes lizards and small mammals, and has even been seen catching bats in Borneo.
