Placed in a decorative niche is the iconic figure of Durga. Dyed in the most amazing of colors, this theme is a popular one since she is one of the most spectacular of all personifications of the feminine principle in the universe.

A long war had been waged between the gods and the demons. The king of demons, Mahishasura won the war and established himself in heaven. To regain their lost turf, the gods all concentrated their powers, giving rise to flames that united into a blazing sphere which took the shape of a goddess. Each of the gods then handed over his weapon to her.

One of the most invoked forms of this great goddess is in her manifestation as a youthful, multi-armed deity who successfully battles the mighty buffalo demon who symbolizes the elemental powers of brutish ignorance. In this depiction, Durga decapitates the buffalo, and the demon Mahisha emerges in human form from the buffalo's neck and attacks the goddess. Durga then kills the demon with her spear.

She is adorned in a jewel encrusted crown. In her hands she holds a conch shell, discus, trident, bow, arrow, shield, sword, noose, and mace. She sits on a magnificent lion that strides across the surface of the picture like a stealthy threat. This animal displays a whiplash line and deep breathing amplitude of form.

Indeed a fine representation of the most popular form of Devi.
