Batik, like any other art, is all about creativity, dexterity and patience. Cotton is generally used and once the basic pattern is drawn, starts the execution, that of dyeing, with wax applied to parts not to be dyed in the particular shade.

Representational and genre scenes are popular themes but the favorite remains the images from the Hindu pantheon. Durga is portrayed here as a youthful woman with peerless beauty. She is adorned with a gilded, stone encrusted crown and other jewelry along with a long garland of flowers. She is garbed in a deep red and green sari with multifolds falling gracefully at her feet. Her powers are represented by her multiple arms which radiate out of her torso conveying energetic movement. The eight arms bear a conch, bow and arrow, a lotus, and a mace on the left, and a discus, a trident, a sword and the abhaya mudra with the right.

Peaceful and tranquil expression on her face, Durga stands erect against her mount, the magnificent lion. An aggressive and wild animal by nature, the lion is looking gentle as if tamed by the Great Goddess.

The pictorial image arouses devotional musings other than the appreciation of thematic and artistic work.
