As in the development of Hindu images, the popular piety of devotion (bhakti), is directed towards the person of the Buddha, worshipped as Lord and redeemer, who elicits total surrender, love and adoration.

A lotus floating on the cosmic waters seats the Buddha, sitting in a yogic posture. In one upturned palm, he holds a bowl and with the other hand he makes the Abhaya mudra - which grants the boon of fearlessness. The face depicts a rare tranquillity. The inwardness of the closed eyes, the steady curves of the eyes and eyebrows, the full lips and the smooth roundness of form, all these seem to emphasize that here is an image that expresses an inner experience of purity and compassion, the supreme attributes of enlightenment.

The robe that Buddha wears does not seem to be monastic. Black in colour, it covers both the shoulders. It has a continuous vine pattern for the border and the field is dotted with tiny white flowers. Back of the throne encompass his body and the head has been set against a huge halo (prabhamandala). The rest of the background is covered with impressive floral patterns in limited colours.
