As Prince Khursam and Arjumand Bano, the two fell in love and spent nineteen blissful years together. The undying love Shah Jahan had for his wife is unquestionable.
Seated on elaborate thrones, their attire is rich and royal. Exquisite jewellery decorates their necks, ears and arms. Mumtaj wears a crown that horizontally extends beyond her face and scallops at the upper edge. Shah Jahan wears an turban decorated with ornaments and a plume. In his hand, he holds a jewel, a unique piece, offering it to his beloved. He looks at her so lovingly, unable to keep his eyes off her. Mumtaj holds a rose, an emblem of love, in her hand but has a distant gaze in her eyes. The niche is in the background, beyond which one witnesses the setting of the sun and the evening sky. Perhaps beauty of nature lies ignored in the case of these two lovers.
A large portion of the semi-circle is intricately carved into rows of small flowers. The artist has used a varied colour palette, including colours like saffron, turquoise and pink.
