The Indian artist had a natural gift for portraiture which reached its apogee during the reign of Jehangir. Zoological portraits representing birds and animals are the most faithful and intimate studies. However, animal art is not easy. Close observation of the subject in its natural element is necessary for accurate representation. The artist has to have a love of animals (nature) combined with a reverence for accuracy and naturalism.

This painting of the Rohu fish is undoubtedly an outstanding work for its spontaneity. The fish are shown in a state of rhythmic movement, as if riding up or down. It has been executed with absolute confidence and maturity. This simple composition, diagonal in representation, accommodates the central theme more spaciously, in order to allow maximum detail. The fish around it are used as balancing tools. There is careful and precise draughtmanship with color applied in small areas that are meant to describe scientifically the physical surface of the fish. The scales and the fins are painted with a single hair brush to accord the minutest detail. A slight shading of pink is given close to the mouth which helps in dividing it from the rest of its body. The fins and tails of the subsidiary fish are elegant and display vigorous movement. A subdued palette has been used. The background is pale, keeping with the soft colors used to paint the fish. It also enhances the effect showing maximum detail as the background blends in one pigment.

Quality of detail and dexterous rendering of colors and the lively effect of the subject makes the picture pointedly commendable. It fully confirms to the rules of naturalistic study replete with essential aesthetic appeal.

Calligraphy on the top and bottom enhance the illustration.
