Indian art re-fashions the mundane world in terms of the transcendental truths and values of myths and metaphysics. Religion, in turn has decided the path art takes.

An average Indian is ruled by religion and ritual worship is an integral part of religion. The general term for this worship is puja. This includes the offering of flowers and water, sandal-wood perfume etc, which delight the senses of the worshipper. Another important act is the honouring of the deity with light, oil or camphor lamp, often to the accompaniment of the ringing or handbells and the singing of hymns. This rite is called 'arti and is central to Hindu worship. The ritual is generally concluded by blowing the conch shell.

The Shivalinga forms the central item of the painting, which depicts various things necessary for a ritual worship. Puja expresses not the deity's requirements but the most eloquent gestures of human devotion.
