"Gopashtami" or Festival of Cows Pichwai

$490

Lord Shrinath (a form of Krishna) stands amidst a herd of pristine cows and fair milkmaids or gopis. At the centre of the pichwai canvas glimmers His dusky complexion. He is, of course, playing on His flute. The divine music emanating from it holds captive every heart that is chaste and pure in its ways.

The work of art that you see on this page is a pichwai painting. Pichwai paintings are an age-old form of folk art that visually narrate episodes from the life of Krishna. This one is deeply expressive of how kind the Lord is to every innocent creature that loves Him. Amidst the cows and the milkmaids are a few young boys, the cowherds of Vrindavan. Along all four edges of the pichwai are miniscule images of the white cow.

In the blue heavens above are multiple images of Vishnu-Lakshmi borne on a swan-drawn chariot. The facial glamour of Lord Vishnu pours forth from the setting sun (Krishna is an avatara of Vishnu).
