In batik, religious imagery is very popular, though scenes of daily life are frequently represented. Here, three village belles are coming back from the community well or the river, after filling their respective pots with water. It's time to catch up on the gossip - and women being women can't resist it. Dressed in long ghagras and cholis with long odhinis covering their heads, they look quite elegant. They all wear a head ornament, nose studs, necklaces, bangles, and anklets. Their noses are sharp, mouths full and eyes shaped like a fish, under finely arched eyebrows. Their slim waists are visible between their ghagras and cholis.
A soft base - a ring made of rolled up cloth makes for the comfortable placement of their water urns. The pots are beautifully painted in geometric design, and are held with ease by their delicate hands, As the two women walking behind gossip animatedly, the one in front is lost in her own problems and seems least interested. The colourful village life is here depicted in simple colours.
