Batik is not the easiest of Indian crafts. It involves a great deal of dexterity and patience. After having passed through numerous waxing and dyeing circles, this picture visibly shows the artist's command over color and form. This figurative work mainly dwells on a transfixed moment between the person and the situation. It, in a way, compels us to explore the internal and external reality.

This forlorn and sad figure expressively stylized has something monumental about it, other than an enigmatic situation. The portrayal is such that the viewer can feel the anguish this lonely man experiences and empathize. The man is depicted after the rural Punjabi traditional fashion. He wears a long kurta and a lungi (unstitched wrap around). He is playing a different musical instrument with each hand. A bag of essential goods hang on his right shoulder as he roams from place to place in search of either true love or peace of mind. His body profile is frontal and the face has a side profile, accentuating fine features. He has long, tapering fingers placed on the ektara (a single string instrument). The restrained power, serenity and elegance of the figure is reflected here in sinuous bold and vigorous curves drawn with precision in a line of unvarying thickness, showing dexterity of drawing and expression.

This composition is a magical combination of the real and the unseen, the familiar and the forbidden. Through the soft hues of a few colors, his grief is forcibly expressed.
