In Mughal art, many literary descriptions of mythical animals were given a visual form. If many creatures, which appear in Islamic sources are not known to have had a physical existence in the material world, they nonetheless had a real presence in the imaginal worlds of poetic and literary traditions where their identity and attributes were elaborated.

This composite image comprises the animal, bird and human forms and presents one such image around which are spun numerous tales and fables. The colourful wings seem to be growing out of the animal body as a beautiful female head emerges up from the mane of the horse, which forms the upper body of the woman. What is outstanding, is that all characteristics blend so well together that this imaginary could very well be real! The female face has exquisite features and wears a fancy Iranian crown and jewellery; the horse wears an equally rich saddle.

The background looks as unreal as the image itself. The clouds in the blue, night sky play hide and seek with the full moon. Notwithstanding the clouds, the stars still twinkle brightly. The landscape has hills and trees, a calm, flowing river on the bank of which is a palatial building with huge domes. In totality, a dream–like painting!
