Hanuman was the son of Vayu by a vanar on monkey mother. He rendered most valuable services to Rama. It was he who discovered Sita's abode and carried a message to her from Rama. It was he who set fire to Lanka. He was extremely powerful and all the powers he devoted to the service of Rama.

This batik painting depicts a tale from Ramayana wherein Lakshmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama, was grievously wounded in the fight. Nothing but a particular herb in the hills of Himalayas could restore him. Hanuman fled to the Himalayas from Ceylon. On reaching there he had difficulty in finding the herb. In desperation, he uprooted the entire hill to bring back to his lord.

Hanuman with his strong limbs and a swinging tail stands here with the hill in one hand and a mace in the other. He is shown in the sacred yellow colour, a colour depicting 'bhakti'. His clothes are green depicting prosperity; the halo is red, symbolizing energy. Hanuman's loyalty to Ram has become proverbial, and he is held as a symbol of faithfulness and self surrender.
