The major theme of Rajasthani and Kangra painting is love. A favorite text with the painters was the Rasikpriya which derives inspiration from the Krishna cult. The nayak and nayika in the Rasikpriya are Krishna and Radha, the ideal lovers, symbols of God and the indiviadual Soul. An important finding from a close analysis of the text and the drawing is that while adhering to a stylistic convention, the artist understands fully and sensitively the subtle nuances of the poetic imagery.

Krishna played an important role in the religious, social and cultural life of India and his life stories have attracted the artists in all ages. Here, they paint him as the divine lover in a royal style with charming colors. There is a lyrical movement in their figures. Radha has a serene beauty in her slim figure, soft skin and a golden complexion. Her limpid eyes with a dreamy look combined with the smile of pleasure that has lit up her face, make her look more beautiful than any amount of ornaments could. She is feeding the parrot and points out to Krishna some of its playful activities. The colors of her dress have been carefully selected so as not to interfere with the deep purple of the curtain behind. The blue bodied Krishna is shown tall and slender having sharp features. He wears a green dhoti which is a deviation from the normally depicted yellow one. He also wears a red brocade shawl and an ornamental crown replete with a peacock feather. Both of them stand on a plush royal blue carpet, against a satin purple curtain having golden braided strings.

In this picture, we observe that the left part of the picture contains the building portion, the right part, however, shows plain space. This type of arrangement creates interest and movement.

This painting is distinguished by a careful finish, brilliant colored costumes, architectural settings and romantic landscape. The artist has apprehended the beauties of nature with great sensibility and dexterity. The glowing sunset brings a flood of poetry into this painting.
