Indian art has been acclaimed by scholars as religious in nature but sensuous in feeling. Krishna is one of the most complex personalities in the Hindu pantheon. He is a Machiavellian Statesman as well as a philosopher par excellence in the Mahabharata. In the Bhagwatapurana he is the cowherd god who charms the milk maids of Braj with his sexuality as well as song and dance.

In an oval frame is the realistic portrait of Krishna with a beautiful chiseled face and large lotus like eyes. He has a straight nose and a soft smile playing on the lips. Wearing an elaborate crown with a lot of embellishments, and of course, a peacock feather, he looks divine. Jewellery also adorn his ears, neck and arms, as a wild flower garland also rest on his neck. A yellow garment, a kind of uttariya is draped around his shoulders.

The way Krishna holds the flute and raises it to his lips is conscious and the movement and gesture is to attract the gopis (cowherdesses). Metaphorically, he is the supreme being, the great soul, into which the individual soul (atma) represented by the gopis will merge, drawn by the enchanting magic of his flute. Moreover, his entire person is grace personified. His image here is at once simple and elaborately crafted.
