This graceful Mughal lady with supposedly animated demeanour, rests against a cushioned pillow. With her left hand she holds the stem of a hookah (ancient Indian tobacco pipe).

Fully draped in an orange colored garment, with the hems embroidered in gold, she sits in a stance that lies between relaxation and being ready to spring up in disturbed animation. What is the cause of this gentle lady's agitation, has her warrior husband gone to some far off place to take part in a bloody war?, and she awaits the news of his well-being?, or is she a love-lorn lady who has been saddened by her lover's dejection of her?

Especially noteworthy is the contrast offered between the slim upper part of the anatomy and the wide, heavy abdomen region.

This artwork is from the atelier of Syed Shakir of Jaipur, winner of the National award in the realm of Miniature Painting.
