The most important artistically active Muslim dynasty was that of the Mughals. But Aurangzeb's reign saw a tragic decline of royal patronage and a subsequent decline in art as a whole. During this period, many other styles of painting cropped up, basically a blend of Mughal and local schools. Major among them were the Deccani, the Rajasthani and the Pahari schools.

This painting is a fine blend of styles. There is nothing inessential or inexpressive in it. One senses the interaction of the lady across empty space. It comes across as a flesh and blood quality. The language here is of gestures and emotions. The demeanor of the lady speaks of its noble bearing and the delicate twists of the loosened sari and the serene expression suggest inner contentment and joy. The atmosphere is leisurely, with the woman smoking a hookah. The brocade curtains, the rich silk bedspread compliment the wealth in color. Illuminous pink, yellow, green and red provide a moving accompaniment to this gentle mood of reflection. Gold jewelry studded with precious stones is very finely painted. The distinct 'bindi' worn on the forehead confirms that the lady is of Hindu origin. The manner of wearing the sari, with one end loosely drawn across the chest and covering the rear portion of the head is Deccani. The syle of painting shows influences of the Mughal tradition, e.g.. the arch of the alcove and the inlay work on the wall behind.

This style of painting consistently recognizes, acknowledges and investigates the individuality and personal uniqueness of the people it portrays. The graceful flexes of the female form, the overall refined treatment and entirely rich and pleasing color tones imbue the paintings with great vitality.
