Fire-Spewing Tandava Of Umapati Lord Nataraja

$95
The force of His dance is as destructive as it is creative. He lords over the lokas (realms of existence) with His destructive prowess, the prerequisite to creation. As He dances, He exudes agni (fire) that at once destroys and births the new. He is Lord Nataraja, husband to Devi Uma (Lord Umapati) in the midst of His tandava. It is on the back of the snake-grabbing epileptic that He dances, making for a picture of His victory over avidya (ignorance).

His supple white body has been portrayed in the traditional mudras of the Nataraja image. A short loincloth reveals the grace of His motioning limbs, while a ferocious snake moves about on His torso. His hair flays behind Him from the momentum of His tandava, and His crown looks ready to fly off His divine head. This unusual Nataraja composition depicts the Lord sideways - zoom in on the powerful jawline, the determined mouth, that gaze full of ekagrata (single-pointedness of the psyche).

In front of Him and behind Him rise clouds of scarlet flame which burns brighter and brighter with the depth of His tandava. He is surrounded by a ring of flames, made with super-expressive brushstrokes. Note the line of fire in the foreground, and how the sheer proportion of agni in this work conveys the all-consuming power of the Lord.
