The Omniscient Gaze Of Lord Brahma

The Omniscient Gaze Of Lord Brahma

The Omniscient Gaze Of Lord Brahma

If not for Lord Brahma, the world would not have existed as we know it. One of the trifecta of deities that dreams the world into being, again and again and again, He is known for His watchful, all-powerful gaze upon us and the illusions that surround us. The Madhubani painting that you see on this page captures the glory of the Lord in His chaturbhujadhari (four-armed) form, the ascetic’s kamandalu intact in one of His hands. The distinctive Lord Brahma iconography could be gleaned from the depiction of four heads, only three of which are visible to the viewer.

The Lord Brahma is clad in flowing silken robes and adornments fit for the finest of divine beings. An alluring halo surrounds His multiple heads, the hypnotic curves of the same making for a powerful visualisation element. Hints of the ascetic abound in this painting: an overgrown beard and the vast aranyaka (wilderness) of the background. The large, symmetrical, alluring eyes of the Lord are a signature aspect of traditional Madhubani paintings.
