From the gods they seek power. So in the ritualization of energies, Hanuman, the monkey general of Rama's army, becomes a link between cosmic energies and the human desire for strength. Hanuman was the son of Vayu (wind (Pavan)), by a Vanara or monkey mother.

According to The Ramayana, the monkey leader rendered most valuable services to Rama. It was he who discovered Sita's abode and carried a message to her from Rama. It was he who set fire to Lanka and instilled fear in the hearts of its inhabitants. It was he who bore Rama on his shoulders as he crossed over from India to Lanka.

Here, he is seen kneeling with his mace lying next to him. One of his hands is in a gesture of blessing and the other rests on his knee. He holds a rosary of beads on which he counts Lord Rama's name. His gentle eyes belie his strength. His body is painted in a manner that exudes vigour and energy. His long tail curls up above his head. His garments are colourful. He is adorned with jewellery which is studded with actual glass stones of various colours. The mace is also decorated with colourful stones, which, together with the golden paint, looks extravagant.

While the foreground shows solid earth, the background is a mass of dark clouds gathering around the loyal devotee of Lord Rama.
