The heavily notched bill and the black moustachial line are the trademarks of this falcon. It also has long, tapered wings and a long, narrow tail. The head and upper parts are slate blue while its breast and belly are a buffy tan with dark brown bars and spots. The eye is dark and the feet are yellow.
The main prey of the Peregrine are birds, and it is the manner in which they are taken that has earned the Peregrine such fame. Nearly all its victims are captured in flight, and having seen its prey, the falcon gains height above it, then half closes its wings and stoops at its quarry at tremendous speed. The lethal blow is delivered with the powerful hind claw, and frequently the victim is allowed to fall freely to the ground before the Peregrine descends to collect it.
