The two women here both play the ektara. The ektara is a single stringed instrument, hence its name (ek = one; tara = string). As early as the last decade one could see such musicians performing for a receptive audience in the streets in India. The only difference remaining that such sensuous performers were rarely or never observed, at least by the present reviewer.

That these women are poor is evidenced by their potli (an ordinary cloth tied up as a bag with the help of a knot), seen in the foreground, which has a patch of different color sewn into it. Nevertheless these ladies are extremely graceful and not shorn of modesty.

The major strength of Harikrishen, the artist of this piece, is the harmonious blending of his elongated stylized female figures with the natural curvaceousness of the feminine physique. This is in ample display here.
