India has an old tradition of hunting as royal sport. For the Mughals, hunting was not simple an amusement; it was also a very shrewd stratagem. The royal cavalcade was a fighting force, and hunting expeditions were often the best means of moving troops freely round an area to monitor possible sedition without provoking alarm.

This painting is the scene of the qamargah, a spectacular hunt in the style of the Timurids. A particular area was earmarked and all the game within it was driven towards the centre from the outer edges. As the circumference is drawn in like a noose, the trapped animals are hunted down. The nobles of the court and the emperor are in the midst of action here. On oxen carts and horses, they have surrounded the animal. Trained leopards with collars around their necks are used to round up the hunt. The antelopes and the fawns here have no escape route and are destined to die at the hands of the emperor. The swirling movement of the animals brilliantly suggest the swiftness of the hunt. The wild expression in the eyes of the carnivorous and the gentleness in those of the herbivorous has been aptly captured by the artist.

The pink, blue and green hills in the background merging with the clear blue sky with curling clouds speak of the Persian influence. The dense trees of various varieties appear in the foreground as well as the background. The land between is smooth with sparse vegetation, clear for the depiction of the main action.
