Paintings of extraordinary beauty and variety were made for the many royal courts of India during a golden age that unfolds in the sixteenth century and continued into the British period. The Mughal painting reflects an interest that is exclusively in persons and events and is essentially an art of portraiture.

This portrait displays a pure, confident technique, restraint and a marked classicism. The prince in this painting wears a turban typical of the Shah Sahani period with an ornamental band, a kalgi and a long plume. He wears a long transparent jama, tied under the right arm. The pyjama is embroidered brown in colour. The patka is gold brocade and neatly held by the prince. He wears multiple strings of pearls. In one hand he holds the flower of the flowering tree he stands beneath. Fine as a hair, as clear and definite as it is possible for human hand and eye to make it, the line of the features in this portrait is a remarkable piece of execution.

The background is in flat green colour with a hint of the skyline and clouds and the upper edge. Besides the portrait a thin tree occupies a major part of pictorial space. The tree itself has a few branches and sparse leaves and flowers. The foreground is a couple of shades darker with a variety of flowers growing all over. The whole picture is bound in an exotic, narrow border with golden flowers.
