Indian thought has made ample use of myths and symbols. In them, transcendental truth finds place and expression which would be difficult to express in words.

Shiva is not exactly the 'ascetic', the divine hermit who meditates seated upon the Himalayas. He is also a family man, residing in Kailash, enjoying his marital bliss. Here he is sitting with his consort Parvati and his son Ganesha on the skin of a tiger. His matted hair is wounded into a mop high upon his head, kept in place by a coiling serpent. Another serpent emerges from around his neck and forms a hood over Ganesha's head. Shiva holds his trident and drum in one hand and in the other, he holds a conch, reminding one of his image as Hara Hari, which is a composite image of Shiva and Vishnu. His consort holds the lotus in one of her hands reminding one of Lakshmi's attribute. She wears a rich red saree with a decorative crown and jewellery. The artist has fused the images of Ganesha with Bala Gopala, the hair knotted on top and a peacock feather inserted in it. He holds the elephant goad, a lotus and a modaka in his hands and makes a 'fear not' gesture with the left hand. Ganesha's constant companion and his vahana, the mouse, sits close to him as he sits on his fathers lap.

The colours used in the main subject are brilliant and clear while the background holds various hues in various patterns.
