Tanjore is a typical South Indian painting style characterized by its iconic compositions, rich, flat and vivid colors and progressive use of semi-precious stones to highlight the ornaments, background structures etc. This thickly framed painting depicts Lord Krishna’s divine family standing in their royal kingdom; framed in the iconic 22 karat foils forming heavenly structures at the top and the pink and green curtains settled in absolute contrast.

The beautiful portraits of Lord Krishna in the middle and his two consorts, Rukmini and Satyabhama stand on either sides of his sides; their mesmerizing combinations of attires and the grand and distinctive jewellery adorned by them glorifies their cosmic persona. Rukmini was Lord Krishna’s principal wife and Satyabhama was the third consort and an avatar of Bhumi Devi (Goddess of Earth). Their astonishing flower garlands and the grand peacock feathered crown enhances Lord Krishna’s aura. The two heavenly apsaras pictured at the top, fly with their delicate wings and sprinkle flowers of beauty and love on these adorable deities.

Painter here has very beautifully used his color sense of differentiating the royals- Lord Krishna in his natural bluish toned plumage whilst Rukmini and Satyabhama shine in their glories in blush pink and lightening yellow shades; superfine carvings and briefings with the use of sparkling red, green and white stones enhances the beauty, love, harmony and a sense of romance with this Thenjavur painting.
