The artists of Nathdwara in Rajasthan found fulfillment in serving their lord, expressing their love for him by producing art works only to please him.

Painted in black upon degrees of dark blue or deep grey, this frontal image of Srinathji has a compelling presence. The dark deity emerges from a cascade of garlands. Starting from the ornate crown resting at an angle, the deity wears necklaces and armlets with pom poms. He wears a chakdarjama. The deity's left arm is concealed behind the attire and the hand holds lotus buds and flowers on long stems. The sense of animation that charges the image and motifs alike springs from the sense of ornament.

The background is dull beige with white pattern, the only subdued part of the painting. The border again is deep ochre with red and green floral pattern. The foreground has the articles required for the worship of the deity. The painting has a lively manipulation of bold, robust form in spontaneous, calligraphic flourish. The deity is dark and the use of white in the painting achieves sensuous translucence of incredible incandescence. This is made possible with the inter weaving of motif in their different forms for the singular purpose of serving the visual structure.
