Paintings of extraordinary beauty and variety were made for the many royal courts of India during a golden age that unfolds in the sixteenth century and continued into the British period. There was an intense interest in naturalism and convincingly organic representations of personalities and physical appearances.

This portrait reflects the intimate scale and elegant simplicity. The artist seems a scrupulous observer of human features; concerned far more with technical perfection than with human warmth, yielding a rational and highly formal style of portraiture. He is an important dignitary and the badges of honor and the sash speak highly for him. He wears a cap with a tassel hanging behind. The face is penetrating and expressive. He strikes a right balance between sternness and gentleness. That he is not too happy posing is quite evident from his expression. What is also evident is consistent attention to the smallest details, extreme graphic expression and a relative propensity for naturalism.

The subject has a plump face with small eyes and a prominent chin. The concave of his eyebrows is balanced by the convex of his moustache. The lips are partially concealed by the bushy moustache. The formal 'band gala' jacket suits his personality well. The line of the features is not prominent, and is equaled by the subtle modeling of the features themselves, so essential to the life and character of the person depicted. The effect has also been obtained by delicate and carefully blended tones applied with great precision.

The graceful pose, subdued colors, the background where a nimbus affect is achieved, the pensive face and overall mood of restrained dignity are the qualities that turn this portrait into an exclusive work of art.
