One look at the painting and we think of fusion of colour. It truly speaks of creative and chromatic sensation. Modern in composition, it constitute a folk element as well.

The theme of the painting is representational and simple – the creator, the seller and the buyer. But what is not so simple is the interaction between the three. The potter looks at the buyer as the latter looks at his creation, as if trying to assess how he would treat something that he has so lovingly created. The interaction between the buyer and the seller is superficial. The depiction is that of a shop selling clay images. The pictorial space is compositionally and chromatically divided. The right side shows the potter at work on the wheel. Lying scattered around him are urns and bowls. This half has only earthen colours – browns and ochres, with touches of white. All bright colours seem to have been reserved for the left, starting with the bright attire of the woman seller. The basic red, green and yellow find favour with the clay images stacked on the shelf. The shelves have been so divided as to hold the images of gods and goddesses on top, with images with secular themes finding a lower place. Deviating from the pure colours is the buyers kurta in lilac.
