Krishna lila stories referred to in the Bhagawat have been popular themes with painters all over India. Oriya art, especially chitras, are replete with the rasa pictures depicting Krishna with the gopis.

The blue bodied Krishna and the golden fair Radha are ceaselessly brought into juxtaposition, as here. The couple stand under a tree, over the boulders in the Yamuna. They are surrounded by gopis who look overjoyed to be in their company. The artist takes liberties in painting the bodies of the gopis in various colours. They wear fancy headdresses and other ornaments. Their saris have floral designs and a 'kanchuta' (blouse) in different colours covers the ample breasts. In representation, Radha looks similar to the other gopis. Krishna wears a small crown with a kalga. He is dressed in a dhoti and an uttariya, a shoulder cloth.

The trees in the background are painted with a thin brush, different from the bold strokes of colour that dominate the subject. The artists experimentation with colour and design is in keeping with the unique folk tradition.
