As art under the Mughals declined, the artists dispersed to neighbouring lands where they found appreciative patrons. In Guler, an altogether gentle art evolved from the Mughal style and withstood competition and the test of time.

Love is classified into two categories viz. love in separation and love in union. This painting depicts the Virahini nayika, separated from her lover, suffering from anxiety and love longings. Fall and lissom, she braves the terrestrial rain to step out looking for the lover who was supposed to have reached her but was held up by the storm. The unfriendly night is fraught with dark, looming clouds and darting lightening. A family of sarus cranes fly through the stormy sky.

Wearing a long opaque skirt with a transparent odhini, she carries a large umbrella for protection from torrential rain. Her friend refrains from accompanying her and prepares the bed instead. A cat lazing under the bed is motionless. Surrounding the balcony is a lotus pond with water birds in pairs. A pair of cranes, regarded as symbols of true love, stand inseparable.

In the distance is the man of her dreams and his steed who cannot proceed due to rough weather. He wears a hat and a raincoat to protect himself but looks distraught as he is not able to meet his beloved. He waits close to a stream waiting for the rain to calm down before proceeding.
