A number of bird and animal pictures are manifestations of Jahangir's curiosity for unusual things in nature and of the Mughal painter's aesthetic being heavily burdened with objectivity.

This picture of a male deer grazing together with a young fawn is a ruminant of the family 'cervidae,' the males of which have solid, deciduous horns or antlers. The fawn is placed under the care of the adult. If the young one looks vulnerable, the older animal looks gentle as well, speaking largely for the species that is peace loving and keeps to itself. The painting is imbued with warmth of feeling and wealth of emotion.

The body of the animals curve in smooth and continuous lines. Ochre and tan tones have been majorly used. The muscles and bone structure are distinguishable due to clever shading. Equally, finely depicted are the hooves, short tails and antlers - antlers being the only self defense mechanism of this docile animal. The characteristics of the species is excellently captured with maximum possible detail. The artist's ingenious compositional technique can be seen here in the way he subordinates the background to the principal subject. He uses light, adept touches to depict foliage and systematically leaves large areas of the paper untouched, the better to set off the painted areas.

This artwork is an outcome of slow, careful work imbued with realism and achieved within the framework of traditional mannerism of draughtsmanship: it shows a straightforward naturalism.
