According to Vaishnavism, there are five stages of spiritual development. The fifth and an important stage is 'madhurya', the stage of love in which the soul yearns for union with god, who is the lover. The madhurya is typified by the love of man and woman.

The blue bodied Krishna and the golden complexioned Radha represent god and the striving soul respectively. Wearing a yellow ghagra and a green choli, with a diaphanous odhini of orange colour wrapped all around, she holds a garland of wild flowers to put it around her lover's neck. Krishna in all his glory stands with a flute in one hand, adjusting his sash with the other. He wears a chakdar jama and a tight pyjama. An extraordinary head gear sits on his curly hair and the jewellery just multiplies Krishna's beauty.

The undulating landscape in the background constitutes an important aspect in the composition of this painting. A lotus pond amidst converging green hills looks beautiful with blooming flowers. Dense shrubs have sparrows and parrots resting on the branches. A lotus pond in the foreground balances the composition. Architectural aspect of this painting is interesting. A flat roofed pavilion has pillars constructed in a typical Hindu fashion devoid of any other contemporary influence.
