The undying image of the dancing Lord Shiva. The omnipotent, all-annihilating deity breaks into tandava, the name given to His divine dance routine. While His image as the Nataraja, the stance of the raudra tandava, is the more widely known of the two, the one that you see on this page is the ananda tandava. There are many types of tandava expounded in the texts; of these, the ananda tandava refers to the tandava inspired by bliss (‘ananda’) or prolonged happiness.
An upturned lotus bloom rests on a multi-tiered, quadrilateral plinth. On its gigantic pistil dances the Lord. He is balanced on a single leg, the left one, while the right one is raised at a sharp angle behind Him. The skyward facing sole of the raised foot is on the same level as the crown on Shiva’s head. The anterior hands are opened wide on either side of the torso, the angle of the wrists making them look like the wings of a paralokiya (otherworldly), wide-winged creature. The posterior hands are also opened wide: each hand bears the damroo and a quantum of flame, the signature Shaivite implements indicative of life-giving destruction. From the right of the hip descends a length of sash, the hem of which reaches all the way down to the pedestal. This adds a semblance of balance to the dancing figure. Despite the passion of the ananda tandava, the composure of Lord Shiva is one of divine equanimity.
