Prosperity and poverty, auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, fortune and misfortune- what will rule our life out of all these, is solely in our hands. This is a long way of saying, that we are the makers of our destiny. Carved intricately inside a hand, this brass statue of goddess Lakshmi- the goddess of good luck and abundance along with her mount and symbol of her sister- Jyeshtha or Alakshmi, is an excellent illustrative reminder of the above-mentioned idea.

The four-armed Maa Lakshmi is sitting on the back of the owl, a rare representation of the goddess, since in most of her idols, she is given a lotus platform, and, the owl when present, is shown near her feet. Showering gold from her left hand, Lakshmi is seated in a variation of the posture of royal ease. The owl serving as her seat is an artistic device used to signify Alakshmi- the elder sister of the goddess and the manifestation of inauspiciousness and daridrata (scarcity). Both Lakshmi and Alakshmi encased within the fine brass hand are a case in point of the acumen of the artist. The reverse of the hand is carved dexterously by an ornate haath-phool (hand ornament shaped like a flower) with delicate chains running across the fingers which are in turn adorned with rings. Profound in its make and message, this brass icon of Lakshmi is perfect for a temple, a mantelpiece, or a table, from wherever you want the mother goddess to imbibe the valuable lesson of Karma and its fruit to you.
