Ardhanrishvara is a one-of-a-kind cross-cultural deity. It stands for the purusha-prakrti composite, which is the precursor to life as we know it (drshyam). Without the confluence of energy or the masculine principle (purusha) and matter or the feminine principle, there would be neither the perceiver nor the perceived.
