The Buddhist texts were the earliest to mention Benaras fabrics and according to them, Varanasi had been a centre of fine textile weaving for at least two millennia., an unbroken tradition which continues till today. The weavers of Benaras are well known for their entrepreneurial spirit and marketing acumen, coupled with a high level of technical and aesthetic skill, for they take pride in finding new markets and developing new textiles.

This woven stole in deep green and burgundy has the image of Gautama Buddha seated cross-legged with his hands in the Dharmachakra mudra. Buddha is the founder of Buddhism, a world religion and who by becoming enlightened discovered and taught a way to salvation. Buddha here has a face of great individuality with his youthful open-eyed expression. The cranial bump or the usnisa is almost conical in shape, the earlobes are elongated and there is a large, circular halo around him.

Between each image are floral vines with peacocks perched on them. According to Buddhist literature, the peacock symbolizes immortality and fertility. The horizontal border is an interesting mix of abstract and floral patterns. The vertical border is floral too but more fluid and has a typically Benarasi jhalar (frill) on either side of it. Thin tassels are attached to the stole on the two sides.
