Sambalpuri Rainbow Handloom Stole with Ikat Weave from Orissa

$175

Orissa shawls are woven with excellent craftsmanship as a symbol of affection and is made through a process of tie-dying the warp and weft threads to create the design on the loom prior to weaving. Its silk art is linked to Lord Jagannath cult practice, as a tradition of Orissa. Its beauty lies in the sober usage of colors and a weave of white yarn. Ikat is an Indonesian word which means to ‘bind’ and is characterized by blurriness to the design. The one shown here is woven with little blurriness, multiple colors and complicated patterns which is difficult to create and marks its superfine quality and fast colors.

This Sambalpuri rainbow silk stole is a perfect masterpiece of its own kind reflecting an original style of craft with flora, fauna and geometrical designs. The unique feature of this style is that the designs are reflected almost identical on both sides. The weaver has chosen for an amazing combination of colored stripes, woven horizontally in required thickness; use of red, black, white and green colors in any ikat woven textile is its identifiable style; white thread weaving all over the surface in vertical direction in a wavy floral pattern highlights the elegance and charm of this ikat shawl. Its soberness, light shades and multiple colors allows it to be worn on any color and any style of garb.
