The Aesthetics Of Cross-spiritual Sculpture
India, and its religion Hinduism, has had the largest influence over Nepalese art and sculpture. Despite the modern-day prevalence of Buddhism in Nepal, Hindu sculptures are also made by the region's artisans. To devotees it does not matter where or by who a work of art has been made, as long as it serves its spiritual function as an icon and a meditative aid; but to the connoisseur of spiritual art and iconography, the complexities and resulting aesthetics of the origin of a work of art is very relevant. In this section is curated a collection of Hindu deities sculpted in Nepal by local artisans, in keeping with the sensitivity and worldview of the Nepalese sculptural tradition. The icons come with idealised features of Nepalese men and women, since it is thought that the respective cross-religious devotees could identify with an entity that resembles oneself (this of course does not apply to wrathful deities).

Because of the similarities between India's Hinduism and Nepal's Buddhism, and the iconographies in question, it is difficult to distinguish between sculptures of the same deity made in Nepal and in India. Certain elements like flowing vines to frame the composition, relatively simple or single-layered pedestals, and taut graceful facial features indicate the Nepalese origin of the Hindu sculptures in this section. Modern-day Nepalese artisans follow older sculptural styles long established in India, and given that the emphasis is on upholding tradition as opposed to establishing an individual style. The Nepalese influences are more discernible in the unconventional-medium sculptures such as wood and signature gilded copper.

What is the symbolism of Ganesha's elephant head? Why does Ganesha ride on a mouse? What is the spiritual significance of Lord Ganesha? How was Ganesha especially devoted towards his mother Parvati? What are the different symbols Ganesha holds in his hands? These are some of the questions this article answers.
Ganesha - the Elephant Headed God, Art and Mythology
"One who has her origin direct from the mouth of God is Saraswati....When talking of Ushas the Rig-Veda alludes to her as one who unveils herself to the sun as does a bride before her groom...The Rig-Veda liberally elaborates her personality, spiritual in particular - something it has not sought to do in case of most other deities...The Yajur-Veda treats her almost like a physician...The Puranas, too, take up the issue as to whether Saraswati was a river or a goddess and also seek to settle it finally....Puranas attribute to Saraswati several exploits involving unique wisdom and prowess....Her figures brim with unique vigour and timeless youth....Kashmir's classical script is named as Sharda after her name....Saraswati is an auspicious presence that elevates the mind and promotes right knowledge."
Saraswati From Vedas To Our Altar
"...the sacred sound 'namaste' is believed to have a quasi-magical value, corresponding to a creative energy change. This transformation is that of aligning oneself in harmony with the vibration of the cosmos itself...."
Namaste - The Yogic Greeting - Exotic India Art
"...God first created sound, and from these sound frequencies came the phenomenal world... Matter itself is said to have proceeded from sound and OM is said to be the most sacred of all sounds. It is the syllable which preceded the universe and from which the gods were created..."
Om - An Inquiry into its Aesthetics, Mysticism, and Philosophy
"One enters Nepal as a traveler, and leaves as a pilgrim... Nepal is the ideal place to rise above the theoretical... textbooks, and see the twin strands of Tantra and Shamanism... rooted in the eternal and faithful depths of Hinduism, and tempered by the sobering influence of Buddhism... the gods of Nepal do not represent a forgotten era of the past. The deities here are living, and participate in the ordinary existence of everyday life as much as we mere mortals do..."
