Preface

। (सु.सु. 4/7 ) The vaidya (physician) who is well versed in theoretical or fundamental and practical approach to Ayurveda as well as other system of medicine, who is proficient in the manufacture and use of medicines and who is going to provide happiness (health) of people by their ability to treat the disease in a right way, that is called jivitabhisara or pranabhisara (life saver). A physician who knows only one system of medicine doesn't know the principles of that stream definitively. Therefore, a physician should study other system of medicine with Ayurveda.

At the time of medical practice, these statements told by Acharyas are true and keeping into consideration from time to time, Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) has included essential knowledge of modern system of medicine (Medical Science) in syllabus of undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Ayurveda. भिषजा प्राक् परीक्ष्यैवं विकाराणां स्वलक्षणम् । पश्चात् कर्मसमारम्भः कार्यः साध्येषु धीमता ।। (च.सू. 10/21)

The bhishaka (physician) should first look at the symptoms of the disease followed by thorough examination, after which only the treatment of curable disease should be started.

During my undergraduate and postgraduate study period and as an Ayurvedic physician, I have always missed a book that includes both undergraduate and postgraduate syllabus of Ayurvedic medicine and Panchkarma as well as clinical and practical approach required for clinical or medical practice which help in understanding the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of a common clinical condition.

Even today I keep hearing such necessity from my undergraduate and postgraduate students and fellow physicians dedicated in Ayurvedic and Panchkarma practice. Along with this, an Ayurvedic physician is also often under pressure to what extent the Ayurvedic medicines should be used and when the patient should be referred to concern specialist or hospital of Medical Science.

Although it is very difficult task in all these contexts, yet writing this book, all the aspects have been taken into consideration.

I hope this effort will be equally beneficial to both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as practitioners in the field of Ayurvedic Medicine and Panchkarma. However, in spite of being very careful, there will be many errors in this book, hence concern texts should be referred in this regard.

You will also have many invaluable suggestions which I would heartily welcome so that this book can be made more useful in a timely manner.

I express my gratitude to Shri Arpit Gupta and all the members of Chaukhamba Prakashan, Varanasi due to whose meaningful efforts this book has been made available in its own form in a very short time.
