Book Description
Preface

V&S Publishers has always been in the forefront of presenting reading materials in a meaningful and concise manner. Numerous books are available in the market, which form part of Hinduism. Some books are quite long and go into vast depth whereas others are too short and fail to give a clear picture. The present book on Hinduism reflects on the essential elements of Hindu religion and Hindu way of life. The book is a concise compendium for understanding & knowing about Hinduism especially for younger generation.

In some ways Hinduism is the oldest living religion in the world. Yet Hinduism resists easy definition partly because of the vast array of practices and beliefs found within it. It is also closely associated conceptually and historically with other Indian religions such as Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Unlike most other religions, Hinduism has no single founder, no single scripture, and no commonly agreed set of teachings. There have been many key figures teaching different philosophies and writing numerous holy books on Hinduism. For these reasons, writers often refer to Hinduism as “a way of life’ rather than a single religion.

Beliefs in Hinduism:

Hinduism embraces great philosophical ideas of over thousands of years. For thes reason, it's referred to as a “way of life” as opposed to a single, organized religion.

Hindus recognize that there is one Supreme God but worship Him in the form of many gods and goddesses depending upon one's spiritual inclination

Hindus believe in the doctrine of “Samsara” (continuous cycle of life, death, and reincarnation) and Karma (universal law of cause and effect).

One of the key philosophy of Hinduism is “atman,” or Soul. This philosophy holds that all living creatures have a soul which is identical to Supreme Soul. The goal of human birth is to achieve “moksha,” or salvation, which ends the repeated cycles of births and deaths and Soul meets the Universal Soul. All Hindu scriptures exhort to strive for salvation because only man can achive liberation and no other life form like animals, birds and even devtas. Devtas have to take human birth to get salvation as per Hinduism.

One fundamental principle of this religion is the idea that Karma which include – Thoughts, Words and Deeds , past and present determine the quality of current life and also the subsequent births. Hinduism emphasizes purity of Karmas-thoughts, words and deeds to reduce karmic accounts.Hindus strive to perform all actions according to Dharma, which is a code of living based on Hindu scriptures and which emphasizes good conduct and morality.

The Om and Swastika are two unique symbols of Hinduism.

Hindus believe in co-existence and revere all living creatures; consider as cow a sacred animal and worship Peepal tree

Hinduism is closely related to other Indian religions, including Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism and society is well integrated while following religion of choice.
