The epic Ramayana is largely occupied with the story of Rama’s life, and the poets have found in its legends subjects for their most attractive poems. To a vast number of Hindus, Rama is not merely the king of Ayodhya, but their saviour and friend.

Rama was portrayed as an ideal son, husband and king was later deified and accepted as an incarnation of Vishnu. Here Rama is adorned with all the royal marks of a king. Wearing necklaces, earrings, bracelets and armlets, this is prince Rama before he was exiled to the forests by his step-mother. He is dressed in a lower garment (dhoti) tied at the waist with a prominent knot. He also carries a long shoulder cloth, falling off his shoulders, reaching the ground on both sides. As described in the Agni-Purana, Rama holds the bow in one hand and an arrow in the other and an ornamented quiver at his back holds numerous arrows. His bow is supremely crafted, the ends in shape of elegant swan heads.

Even in the solid metal such as brass, the rotundity of the limbs is maintained; a tactile quality is given to Rama’s clothes and the curves in the bow are skilfully manipulated. Attention is paid to the minutest detail down to the toe nails. The pedestal, on the other hand, is solid and simple.
