Devi Sarasvati, Hinduism’s presiding deity over learning and the fine arts. Wife of Brahma, indispensable to Him in His function as cosmic creator. A wood-carved chaturbhujadharini Sarasvati is just the sculpture to add to your home if you are a Brahma and/or Sarasvati devotee.
Against a tall, rectangular frame of solid wood She stands, Her wisp-like beauty having been carved from the same medium. Amongst straight-cut aureole and lotus-shaped plinth and the very form of the divinity, it makes for a strong monotone. The same is punctuated by the wealth of gradient implicit within a natural, organic medium such as wood.
Elongated lotus petals below the plinth upon which Sarasvati stands. A world of sashes dangling about Her dhoti. A highly characteristic Devi shringar. Strikingly handsome countenance. All these are hallmarks of traditional South Indian craftsmanship, of which this work is a fine example.
