Akasha Raja, a king near Tirupati performed yajnas and worshipped the gods, praying for a child. As a result of his austerities, a lotus arose from the earth, holding a beautiful baby girl. The child grew into a charming young maiden, with skin as radiant as gold. The king named his daughter Padmavati (lotus-like or lotus-born woman). The divinely beautiful princess was none other than Goddess Lakshmi who after an argument with her consort, decided to leave Vaikuntha.

Under a finely designed yali, we have a brass statue of Goddess Padmavati, sitting regally, dressed in a sari, and covered in stunning jewelry. In two of her upper limbs, she holds the lotus flower, a typical attribute of goddess Lakshmi. With her left hand, she bestows abundance and her right hand is raised in the Abhaya Mudra, a gesture of fearlessness.

According to local traditions, Vishnu followed his beloved to the earth in the form of Venkateshwara and married Padmavati. The divine couple resides in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, in temples not far from each other
